Social Justice

My time at Elizabethtown College taught me the importance of social justice and how to incorporate it into my future teaching. My teaching philosophy has been influenced by a desire to create a positive classroom culture and an accepting community within my classroom. The following artifacts exhibit my dedication to social justice and being an advocate for all students.
IEP Brochure

I created this brochure to inform families about IEPS and the process. This artifact highlights my commitment to social justice and guaranteeing students and families have all the information so they can best understand the process. My brochure demonstrates advocacy and my dedication to all students.
Equity Lessons
This document consists of different equity lesson resources I found and how I would adapt them for my classroom. A focus for my teaching is addressing the hidden curriculum and creating an inclusive, diverse curriculum. This artifact contains websites, lessons and ideas to foster community in the classroom and represent students in the topics they learn about.

Discussion Posts
In my senior seminar class, we read Wayne Au's book, Rethinking Multicultural Education: Teaching for Radical and Cultural Justice. My peers and I responded to a number of discussion posts about chapters and ideas in the text. Conversations revolved around racism, diversity, the hidden curriculum and creating change. These topics fall into the category of social justice because we talked about equality or lack there of that some groups face.

Tempest Day Reflection
Each year, the Education Department at Elizabethtown College hosts a Tempest Day of Action. The purpose of this event is social justice because it is a pillar of our department. At this specific event we talked about privilege, bias and ways to handle these in our future classrooms. Every teacher will encounter bias and difficulties in the classroom and it is important to have tools to deal with this.
